While pursuing a fugitive last Tuesday, two police officers ended up in the line of fire.

Yesterday, Ottley Hall resident, 26-year-old Attiba Best, was hit with a single indictable charge at the Serious Offences Court in relation to this incident.

Best is charged that on February 19, at Ottley Hall, he did unlawfully discharge a firearm at PC 551 Mohammed Lavia and PC 700 Verrol Sam, contrary to section 185 of the criminal code.

Reports are that the police were on patrol, and tried to approach the individual who ran, discharging a firearm as he went.

The unemployed youth is not represented by an attorney, but the prosecution had no objection to his bail.

Subsequently, Chief Magistrate Rechanne Browne-Matthias allowed bail in the sum of $10,000, with one surety. Best is to report to the Central Police Station, on Mondays and Thursdays between 6am and 6pm, and surrender his travel documents (Identification card, passport, driver’s license).

The defendant needs the permission of the court if he wants to leave the state. His next court date is March 13.

Best asked for a phone call to find someone to bail him, but he did not make bail before court had adjourned for the day. He was taken away in police transport.
