MFA primary schools’ football kicks off Monday
Eleven schools from the Marriaqua and South Central Windward constituencies have registered for the Marriaqua Football Association’s primary schools’ football competition.
Kicking off on Monday April 4 at the Cane End Playing Field, competing schools will meet one another twice in the Nine – A – Side format.
Set for the Cane End Playing Field from Monday, April 4 the competition has drawn interest from 11 schools.
Seeking to take top honours in the competition are Argyle Primary, Belmont Primary, Cane Ends Government, Diamond Government, Evesham Methodist, Greiggs Primary, Lauders Government, Lowmans Windward Anglican, Marriaqua Government, Richland Park Government and Richland Park Seventh Day Adventist Primary.
Buoyed by the response from the schools, president of the MFA, Yosiah Dascent expressed glee in having the young students engaged in football during the Easter vacation.
“ We are happy to host this competition which will run for the duration of the vacation… It will be a nine- a- side format… Each match will be twenty minutes, chunked in quarters of five minutes each”, Dascent said.
The winner will be decided from the school which accumulates the most points after their 10 matches.
Dascent said that the competition will ignite interest in the sport as there are signs of some “normalcy”, after the protracted layoff due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The MFA president is high in praise for Stephen Da Silva of Memorial Funeral Home, who ensured that most of the teams were outfitted with uniforms.
“ Thanks to Mr. Da Silva who readily came forward and said he wanted his company to be part of the competition, hence his involvement”.
Dascent related.
He said the MFA is hopeful that an all-female version of the competition will be held in the not too distant future.
