The Government Employees Co-operative Credit Union (GECCU) has once again rewarded academic excellence through the awarding of six scholarships and 20 bursaries to children entering secondary schools.{{more}}
When the presentations were made last Tuesday at the Methodist Church Hall in Kingstown, two of the scholarship winners, Francis Dick and La Claire Robinson, were off the island. However, four others – Zonnia Shallow, Chikezi James, Kervorn Cuffy and Cheresan Commissiong – accepted their scholarships with pride.
The GECCU scholarship programme is 23 years old and according to General Manager at GECCU Lennox Bowman, his organisation is very focussed on education. He added that GECCU could boast of being the organisation that places the most emphasis on education in the country. Bowman, like the feature speaker before him, also encouraged the scholarship winners to be disciplined, “With discipline you can make it,” said Bowman.
Feature speaker, newly appointed Headmistress of the Girls’ High School Andrea Bowman (incidentally the wife of the GECCU general manager) stressed the importance of being disciplined. The school principal explained to the students that this is a new chapter in their lives and that at times things would get hard.
“This is not going to be easy and at times you are going to resent the rigour that you have to go through,” said Bowman while adding that the end product of being disciplined is worthwhile. She also urged students to always work hard and to try their best to push aside distractions.
