KFC SVG Players find gold ‘Beneath the Sea’
It was KFC SVG Players International, the band that went to the depths of the ocean with their presentation âBeauty Beneath the Seaâ that emerged on top in the Band of the Year Competition for the second consecutive year, scoring 410 points after a nerve-racking two-hour late start to Mardi Gras.{{more}}
Despite the delay, patrons and judges at the Victoria Park on Tuesday waited patiently to see the parade of colours and creativity from various mas tents.
With their portrayal of elaborate sea creatures such as Coral Garden, Pearls, Treasures, Tsunami, Jelly Fish and Sting Ray, the costumes produced by KFC SVG Players seemed to come alive.
The band also received the judgeâs nod for Best Use of Colour, but placed third in the Uptown Competition.
Breaking into the second spot with a total of 392 points with their presentation entitled âFrom Shackles to Emancipationâ was the NEWS Heineken Hitz FM Dragons Cultural Organization. Depicting historical events such as European Arrival, Slave Traders, Indigenous People and Slave Rebellion, the bandâs portrayal was in commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the Abolition of the Slave Trade.
Dragons however also had to settle for second place in the Uptown competition, and in the Best Use of Colour competition.
Digicel Nelson Bloc came in third with their presentation âCarnival at Largeâ with 386 points. The band was a celebration of the various carnivals around the world such as Notting Hill Fairies, Spice Mas, Caribana and Labour Day. The mas band from Paulâs Avenue placed fourth for the Best Use of Colour but copped the top spot in the Uptown competition.
Fourth with 378 points was Guinness Y De Lima SVGTV Blondie Bird and Friends with their spectacular presentation of âParadise in the Grenadinesâ. Fifth went to High Voltage with 364 points with their showcase of âTribes of Formosaâ. They also got the third spot in the Uptown competition.
Wizards Mas Camp placed fifth in the Uptown competition.
