A hotel worker who stole over US$1000 from an employee of the Office of the Ambassador of India will be sentenced tomorrow, May 24.

Maruth Francois of Sandy Bay, living in Diamond, admitted her guilt to stealing US$1140 in cash from between May 14 and 19.

The victim, Anju Sharma, is originally from Suriname but is working at the office of the Ambassador, and was part of those responsible for organising the for the three day state visit of the President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind.

When she discovered the cash missing she was about to head out with the wife of the President.

After hearing representations from the Prosecution, Station Sergeant Renrick Cato, Chief Magistrate Rechanne Browne, commented that the matter was highly embarrassing for the country.

Nonetheless, she stated that she wanted to reflect on the appropriate sentence. Ultimately, the court decided to remand Francois into custody today, and sentence her tomorrow.

The court has indicated that compensation will definitely be a part of this sentence.
