We live in a world where we are bombarded with teachings like “Everything flows and nothing stays”; “Everything gives way and nothing stays fixed”. In fact, Heraclitus the 5th century philosopher had left us with the aged old philosophy that “The Only Thing That Is Constant Is Change-”.{{more}} Change is indeed a part of the world and human existence. In fact, Hebrews 1: 10-12 said “And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands: They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment; And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail.” The changing face of the world is evident every day with scores of disturbing headlines around the world reminding or informing us of the disasters and violence that has become almost a primary ingredient in our everyday life. The stories and articles in our newspapers, on our TV screens, or beaming across our airwaves, that paint pictures of the lack of tolerance and restraint that control our societies and world remind us daily of changing times. The political division and barbarism that has become a feature of our Caribbean civilisation, robing us of the community spirit that we once held dear, coupled with the selfish desire of the drug world, to get rich and prosperous without considering the destruction caused by their common human dignity have all helped to accelerate the “changing scenes of life” .

Fortunately for us, something and someone actually remain constant. He does not change with the changing world. He is not affected or influenced by the political debates or the economic disasters. His story of “peace and good will toward men” still remains the same. For all we know, the angel and multitude of the heavenly host are still praising God and singing “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men” (Luke 2:14). For those who choose to listen they can still hear the angel saying unto them, “Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people, … unto you was born this day in the city of David the Saviour, which is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:10,11).

Indeed, everything else will change … but God and His word will remain constant. Things will “…wax old as doth a garment; And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up”, but God’s message of “…peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid” (John 14:27) remains. So as you celebrate this season with however little or great, take time to rejoice and give glory to God for His unspeakable gift that was revealed to us in Jesus.

Peace be unto you, and do have a very blessed Christmas season!
