THE FUGITIVE
Three murder charges have been slapped on Grenadian Sheldon “Dutch” Bain, a fugitive whose name stirred feelings of uneasiness in the country during the latter half of 2004. Now it seems the pieces of the puzzle in the spate of unsolved murders that sent shockwaves throughout St.Vincent and the Grenadines last year, are finally coming together. {{more}}
Officers of the Major Crime Unit (MCU), long hot on the heels of criminals, are claiming a major breakthrough with their homicide investigations into the mystery crimes.
Bain, appearing before Chief Magistrate Simone Churaman at the Serious Offences Court on Wednesday, was charged for the double murder of Roseclair and Lancelot Williams, a couple of Trigger Ridge, Redemption Sharpes, who were shot dead, execution-style, at their home between December 9 and 10, 2004. The Grenadian was also charged for the murder of 28-year-old Livingston Primus of Sion Hill, who was gunned down just before 3 a.m. on August 23, 2004 at the Sion Hill intersection.
Webster Woodley, the son of the murdered Roseclair Williams, was charged on May 10, 2005, for Primus’ murder.
Besides the triple murder charge, Bain also faces two other charges.
He is charged with unlawfully and maliciously wounding Eli Williams, a 25-year-old labourer of Belair, at Sion Hill, on August 23, 2004, and for assaulting Groeita Phillips, a 32-year-old domestic of Biabou, causing her actual bodily harm, also at Sion Hill on August 23, 2004.
Chief Magistrate Churaman remanded Bain into custody on all five charges.
Bain had already been sitting it out at Her Majesty’s Prison since he turned up at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital last February with gunshot wounds to his right leg. He identified himself to police then, and said an unknown assailant had shot him.
Bain, from New Hampshire, St. George’s Grenada, had escaped from jail in February 2004 in his homeland before he was sentenced. He had been found guilty in December 2003, for the murder of a Vincentian trafficker, Omelia Roberts.
It was Bain, who along with Selwyn “Thickskin” Moses, made calls to the NDP’s New Times radio talk show here last December while on the run. They were urged to give themselves up by host E.G. Lynch.
Thickskin met his end in a hail of gunfire in Redemption Sharpes on February 17, this year.
Bain returns to court July 15.
