Marriaqua Government excels

They have so much in common it is no secret why they are the ones that have done their alma mater proud, putting the Marriaqua Government School among the nation’s most outstanding primary institutions in this year’s Common Entrance Examination.

Mbeki Swift, named after the president of South Africa, and Felica Thomas, are both 11 year olds, they are both last child in their families, they are desirous of becoming lawyers, they have inquiring minds, challenge their teachers and are intelligent.{{more}}

Swift, the son of Trevor Jackson and Janine Bentick of Marriaqua did exceptionally well, sharing the top spot for boys with Shaquille Thomas, who also placed first for boys and second overall, as well and Kalina Browne who placed second overall. He had scores of 95 for Mathematics, 90 for English and 88.33 for General Paper.

Thomas, on the other hand, daughter of Eulah Thomas of Caruth Village and the deceased Josiah Williams placed fifth for girls and seventh overall. Her scores were 85 for Mathematics, 96.67 for English and 86.67 for General Paper.

“I am feeling very happy, excited and proud,” said Swift who hopes to attend the St.Vincent Grammar School in September. Thomas wants to attend the Girls’ High School.

“I’ll like to become a lawyer. I want to see justice and fair play throughout the country,” said Swift.

Thomas told SEARCHLIGHT that she had high expectations of doing well because she has been consistent through the years, and for the Common Entrance Examination she studied hard.

She said: “I want to become a lawyer to free the innocent and for us to have justice.” The brilliant lass, when asked who she was referring to when she said “us” explained that she meant people all over the world, an indication that she has no intention of limiting herself to the boundaries of St.Vincent and the Grenadines.

Acting Principal Erene Richardson said: “It’s a good achievement. These children have been working diligently throughout. It is not a fly-by-night achievement.”
