SVG Players shine in Junior Mas
The young masqueraders of SVG Players International captured the Junior Band of the Year title last Saturday in an event which saw thousands of excited youngsters decked out in their costumes dancing and prancing onstage at Victoria Park for Junior Carnival before making their way on to the streets of Kingstown for a their street jump-up.
Appearing in 12 different bands, the youngsters showcased their vibrant colours and creativity before judges and spectators in a show that at times seemed lengthy.{{more}}
SVG Players International was triumphant with their retrospective of winners who dominated local Carnival mas competitions over the years. Their presentation was entitled, âHistory of the Band of the Year Competition in SVG 1962-2005.â
Their unique historic reflection amassed 737 points while Dragons Cultural Organisation took the second spot earning 731 points with an environmental depiction called âMan and His Natural Surroundings.â Third place went to Blondie Bird & Friends who paid tribute to the musical champions of Vincy Carnival with âKing of the Road.â
In the individual 5-9 year old category, Jelani Niles of Blondie Bird & Friendsâ dynamic portrayal of âButtâ took the first spot; second was Jevorne Prescott of Dragons with âFire Stormâ and Shanygne Constance of Nelson Block placed third with âGeisha.â
Dominating the individual 10-15 year old category was Sheriffa Smith of SVG Players International with the depiction âAmerindianâ. Second was Amurick Martin of Blondie Bird & Friends with âSweeter Than Thisâ. The third spot also went to Blondie Bird & Friends with Kemisha Horneâs replica of âGo Right Up In Dey.â
Best Junior Section went to the Dragons Cultural Organisation with âRains Came Downâ. Second was Blondie Bird and Friends with âMambo In the Discoâ, and third was SVG Players International with âGreat Amerindian Civilization.â
Junior Queen of Carnival was captured by Nikiesha Saunders of Blondie Bird & Friends with the depiction of â10 Yearsâ with a total of 399 points; second, with a score of 397 was Donique John of SVG Players International with her presentation of âIn the Hands of Our Peopleâ while Aaliya Smith recorded third with 394 points for Dragons Cultural Organisation with âUniverse.â
The Junior King of Carnival title went to Atron Lockhart of Blondie Bird & Friends with âMouth in Me Momaâ with 420 points. Second with 373 points was Emery James of SVG Players International with âItâs Just My Imaginationâ and third with 365 was Chavez Smith of Dragons Cultural Organisation.
