THE MINISTER OF Local Government is proposing that parking in Kingstown be metered to help ease the parking woes in the city.

Senator Julian Francis said he hopes this system would deter drivers from occupying parking space for long periods of time.

The former Transport Minister suggested that parking meters is an opportunity for private investment.

Speaking on Star Radio on Tuesday night, Francis added that he is willing to propose to Cabinet to grant the necessary concessions to such an investor for the importation of equipment to be used for metered parking.

The scarcity of parking spots was one of the problems highlighted by Senator Francis as he rolled out plans to clean up Kingstown.

He further proposed that an additional floor be built for parking at the Solidarity Car Park on Bay Street.

Persons who operate businesses between Jax Enterprises and Heritage Square have nowhere in Middle Street to park their vehicles, as the area is now crowded with vendors.

“Parking is significantly affected in Kingstown.”

“Bedford Street is totally blocked out from parking,” the minister stressed.

He said something needs to be done, because “parking is becoming and is going to become, a very scarce commodity in Kingstown.”
