Students of Agriculture and Entrepreneurship at the SVGCC give back
Students of the Agriculture Science and Entrepreneurship Programme of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Community College (SVGCC) gave back to the community on July 21 when they handed over one harvesting crate of cucumbers each to The Lewis Punnett Home, The Mental Health and Rehabilitation Centre, and The Thompson Home.
The students place emphasis on the importance of not only food security but also nutrition security. The student managed enterprise is an integral component of the Agriculture Science and Entrepreneurship Programme as the Division of Technical and Vocational Education aims to address food sustainability, security and nutrition through programmes and activities within the Hospitality and Agricultural Department.
In the upcoming semester the Agriculture and Entrepreneurship students plan to engage students of the Sion Hill Government school in Agricultural activities at the primary school’s compound, from planting, harvesting to a small component of value addition, themed “Neighbour Lets Grow Together” – a back yard approach to food security that would supplement their school feeding programme.
This semester the students of the Agriculture Science and Entrepreneurship programme engaged in protected agriculture with the establishment of cucumbers, tomato, butternut squash and bell peppers, as well as nursery production of a variety of herbs in two large poly tunnels. They also engaged in field crop production of sweet corn and sweet potatoes.
The students thanked the public who continue to support them on their weekly sales which are advertised on the the SVGCC Facebook page.
